Broken Pieces

Jack Canon's American Destiny

Author Interview – Emma Right

Monday, August 26, 2013

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

USA! Always. We are so blessed to be in this country.

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?

Lap top in the car while waiting for my kids to finish up some ECA, or at a desk by the kitchen, while waiting in between things on the stove cooking, or food in the oven baking. That way if something’s burning I can run to it, pronto.

Where do you get support from? Do you have friends in the industry?

I wish, I wish, I wish…

How much sleep do you need to be your best?

I haven’t had much sleep since my first born came along almost twenty years ago. Someone who stayed with us said she’d need to catch up on her sleep. I am thinking if I did that I should be sleeping at least ten years non-stop. Move over, Sleeping Beauty.

Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support?

My faithfully patient and kind husband! I don’t’ know how he bears to live with me! And my wonderful kids who see me space-out and know my mind has wandered into some other realm. And Pastor Joseph Prince who taught me about God’s unconditional love and grace.

It is vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing, tell us about your marketing campaign?

Since Keeper of Reign is a YA, or Young Adult book, it begs the question as to what a YA book is. I realize there are so may expectations and when I researched it, “YA” can mean anything from 10-year olds to 18-year olds. Traditionally, it appears that a YA book is for adolescents- hence themes like coming of age etc obviously means that the book must be for young people going through these young issues. Hence when I wrote Keeper of Reign, since I was writing it for my children, I had an image of a ten or eleven-year old to a sixteen year old person. The problem is that so many adults have enjoyed YA books and I feel there is now unnecessary pressure to make YA books more “adult” which I feel is wrong. Children need to remain children. There’s plenty of time for them to graduate to “adult -age” books. And adults reading YA books need to understand that.

Keeper of Reign

Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?

For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.

Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn’t get himself killed first.
